Yeah, that's exactly what someone's managed. Read more about it here and try out the app he built using this approach. I've been saying "If only I could do the UI for my Rails apps in GWT" for a while now. Hmm...

The promise of this approach is using ActiveRecord instead of Hibernate + DTOs at the backend.
Apparently Pibb used a similar architecture - GWT client, Rails + Python. http://ajax.phpmagazine.net/2007/05/pibb_gwt_openid_communication.html
